Your Online Profile

Knowing how to write about yourself online is essential. Since you don’t have all the visual cues that are available when speaking to someone in person, you need to grab the other person’s attention and keep it long enough to have them intrigued about you.

These five essentials “tips” will get you started:

TIP #1: BE HONEST
The person you are in your profile MUST be the person who shows up to meet your date. It’s called being congruent and if you are not, don’t expect your date to stick around to hear what you have to say.

TIP #2: BE ACCURATE
Part of being congruent is making sure that your pictures are up to date. I cannot tell you how many times my enthusiasm for a date has evaporated when the person who showed up was barely recognizable from the photos they had posted.

TIP #3: BE ORIGINAL
Almost everyone online, has the same profile up: “Hi, I’m nice. I’m a good person who respects and loves their family & friends. I like to hang-out and listen to music, go to the movies. I like to have fun and am looking for that someone to be who will be the special person in my life”. Does that sound like anyone you know?

TIP #4: BE SPECIFIC
Be specific about the kind of person you are looking for (age, height, ethnicity, eye color). Be specific about the kind of relationship you are looking for (marriage, long-term, dating, casual hook-up). Be specific about the kinds of things you do, or want to do with the person you’re looking to meet (bungee jumping, mountain climbing, snorkeling, streaking).

TIP #5: BE HUMOROUS
Use humor in a clever way that conveys all the qualities of your “best self”. At some point, it occurred to me that what I was trying to accomplish with all the effort I was putting in to my profile, was to “sell” myself to a prospective date. So I decided to do exactly that. I re-wrote my profile as a parody of a sales letter.

Write your profile with these tips in mind and you are well on your way to meeting someone with whom you can truly connect.
