The weekend usually signals a night of seeing and being seen by our social circles. Generally it is cause for cutting loose and shaking off the stress of the work week with our partner. However, the current economic outlook and rising fuel costs are making “a quiet night in” more and more attractive.
Just because you are not out on the town, looking fabulous in this season’s “must have” Armani suit or Donna Karen original and eating at the latest trendy restaurant, serving up flat water for two dollars a pop, doesn’t mean you have to skimp on having a great time.
You may decide that you want to make lavish romantic dinners part of your evenings in or maybe you are just looking to unwind with your significant other.
Once the dishes are safely returned to their nook or shelf and your eating area has been tidied up, pour yourselves a glass of your favorite beverages, alcoholic or otherwise. I happen to have a counter attached to my kitchen, so I can play bartender.
With drinks in-hand, turn up the stereo and dance, even if you have “two left feet”. The object here is to move into close proximity and create a little intimacy. Keep it playful. Nobody’s judging you on your technique.
Alternatively, you can pop a video into the DVD player. Unfortuantely, nothing kills romance faster than a bunch of dick and fart jokes. I would steer clear of those kinds of movies or shows. For a romantic night in, you want something a little more high-brow.
As well as producing some outstanding award-winning films, our neighbours “across the pond” have a unique ability to write sharp, witty, and tight scripts for the half hour comedy format; even those of the romantic nature. If you can’t get enough of NBC’s “The Office”, thank the Brits. It was their idea first. They are to situation comedies, what Hollywood is to big blockbuster action films. You can check out some of their offerings on the video recommendations page.
If you are planning to spend the night together, you may want to think about lingerie or maybe some funky new bedsheets and a few tea light candles.
If one of you is leaving at the end, walk the other person to their car, bus, metro. Take the opportunity to get some fresh air and be cuddly; not clingy.
